Sassy

When I was born I was placed in an ugly mill
Put in a tiny cage where I just stood still
My little body gave birth to many beautiful puppies
Just so the owner could get rich and make a lot of monies

My little feet stood in a wire meshed cage
All day and night they ached as back and forth I paced
Hoping some day someone would come so I would be saved
Sadly days and months and years passed and no one came

With the stench of urine and feces my cage did smell
There was nothing I could do who could I possibly tell
My food and water bowls were sometimes left empty
Oh, how my stomach wished that it had plenty

The bath I got was with a strong power hose
It would blast my body my eyes and my little nose
Banging me against the wall of my cage
It hurt so bad I wanted to cry out in rage

Five years later I could no longer give birth
My owner figured that now I had no worth
He was ready to get rid of me and put me to sleep
Thank goodness a foster parent saved me and took me in

They took care of my needs and after being impounded
I prayed that soon I would surely be adopted
The phone rang and my heart was a flutter
Could this possibly be a good home with a good mother

I was ecstatic when I heard that Melba wanted me
She would have to make a long drive but certainly would see
That I’m as cute as a button and cuddly as any dog can be
When in her arms I knew that’s where I wanted to be for an eternity

As we drove away I knew I was headed to my new home
Safe in my fancy cushioned bed with fleece in the color brown
My new home was large with a great big yard and safe gates
Quite a contrast from that ugly filthy cage and tiny space

Daily I give thanks and wake up to the dawn of a new happy day
Everything is fine and will always remain this way
I was saved by my mama Melba and now I run and play
So grateful to be alive I really must say

Every day we snuggle and cuddle and she calls me her baby
Yes, she calls my name, oh, by the way it is sassy
I rarely think of that hurtful place that was filthy and ugly
For now I am warm and safe cause my mama Melba loves me
